Kitchen Cabinet Hardware Choices Explained
Most kitchen cabinet hardware items are visible due to their placement on the exterior of cabinet doors. When combined with new doors, replacing the cabinet hardware will create a custom look and feel for your dream kitchen. The most commonly used items are cabinet knobs, handles/pulls and hinges. These functional hardware options are a prominent feature of your new cabinet doors and should be chosen with care.
Understanding Cabinet Hardware Types
The following are the most common types of kitchen cabinet hardware:
- Knobs - The basic configuration of all knobs is quite similar, but some knobs have built-in/hidden screws while some conventional knobs have a more visible screw arrangement. Knobs are typically a round or oval shape, with more decorative, designer shaped knobs also available. Styles can include engraved prints, designs, raised edges and more. Knobs can be used throughout the entire kitchen for a more traditional look, or used in conjunction with handles to bring some modern aspects into your kitchen.
- Handles and Pulls - Typically about 3 inches in length, handles and pulls tend to occupy a bit more space than knobs, but are equally as stylish. They are available in a curved or straight design, with some unique design and pattern options. Handles present a modern look to your kitchen and can be used alone or in conjunction with knobs.
- Hinges - Hinges are also replaced during kitchen cabinet refacing projects, but not all kitchen doors require an extensive hinge selection. For example, if you choose kitchen doors that have hidden hinges, then investing in ornate hinges isn't a very sensible choice. It would be better to focus on other hardware items like door handles and door knobs that are clearly visible in your kitchen.
Cabinet Hardware Pricing
You should consider cabinet hardware items that balance the functionality of the kitchen along with durability, while maintaining a fashionable appearance.
In terms of pricing, the cost considerations are decided by several factors including the material used to make the hardware and the degree of design involved. High-end, handcrafted knobs can be very expensive; however, investing in such expensive knobs isn't the norm. The chosen finish also contributes to the overall pricing of a hardware item. Cabinet hardware with more selective finishing options like antique copper/brass finishing cost more than the conventional finishing choices like stainless-steel or wrought iron.

Hardware
Architecturally speaking, because a drawer front is a smaller surface than a door front, I selected knobs for all drawers and handles for all doors. The look is rich and appropriate to the surface on which the hardware is located.
